Refinishing
To refinish furniture means to strip away the dirt, paint, shellac, varnish, abuse – whatever that is currently obscuring the item. Refinishing goal is to make an item look new.

A piece of furniture that has been refinished should not be distinguishable from a newly purchased item.

This process involves the use of caustic agents to help strip away the old finish and the application of a new finish. This process should only be attempted by someone who truly loves and knows the properties of finishes and wood.

Carving
The piece below is but one example of the art of wood carving. A client called in tears because during the transport of a sideboard that had been in her family for generations one of the cabinet doors blew open and was ripped off – a total loss. The images on the left is the original door, while the images on the right is what John Manzutto carved as a replacement. Can you tell the difference?

Restoration
The art of restoring the sound condition after damage or injury.

Both restoration and refinishing may include repair. The integrity of the piece cannot be compromised by the repair, however. For example, a 1920’s dresser drawer bottom replaced with a piece of mica board or dents filled in with a filler designed to repair car dents may make the item serviceable but significantly reduces the value of the piece.

Restorations should only be made by someone who can appreciate the final goal of the owner and by someone who loves and understands the properties of finishes and wood.
